Why we walk

Millions of people are still living with Long COVID, and many are still searching for answers. This fall, we're asking our community to show up for them, three miles at a time.

Every step of Walk the Long Haul carries a name. Each registration is dedicated to someone: a person fighting Long COVID today, a loved one we've lost, or the wider community still waiting for treatments that work. From Friday, November 20, through Friday, November 27, walkers in every corner of the country will cover their three miles together as Team LONG HAUL, separated by miles but united by one purpose.

Two ways to walk

Wherever you are, you can be part of it. Either way, you're part of Team LONG HAUL.

In person

Join us in Birmingham

Friday, Nov 20 at 2:30 PM Central

Walk the official MVRF 3-mile route alongside patients, families, researchers and supporters.

  • Meet at the front of Mountain Brook City Hall by the fountain, 56 Church Street, Mountain Brook.
  • Park at City Hall in Crestline Village.
  • Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early so we can find each other and group up before we set out.
  • Plan on about 60 to 75 minutes for the walk.

In-person registration closes Thursday, Nov 19 at 4:00 PM Central.

Virtual

Walk wherever you are

Any time, Friday, Nov 20 through Friday, Nov 27

Map a 3-mile route through your neighborhood, a local park or your community using your phone, smartwatch or fitness tracker, and walk it any time that week.

Bonus: the virtual window includes Thanksgiving. Make it a new family tradition. Gather your loved ones on Thursday, November 26, and walk your three miles together.

Virtual registration closes Friday, Nov 27 at 11:59 PM Central.

Invite your family, friends, coworkers, church or support group to register and walk with you.

Register and dedicate your walk

Each walker registers once, with a $50 ticket or a custom amount over $50 if you'd like to give more. When you sign up, you'll tell us who you walk for:

  • In honor of someone fighting Long COVID
  • In memory of someone lost
  • In support of the Long COVID community

MVRF is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 93-2125003), so your registration is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law.

If you plan to walk in person, please send a text to Meme at (205) 909-7690 to confirm.

Print your "I walk for" bib

Pick the bib that fits your dedication, print it, write in the name of the person or cause you're walking for, and wear it on walk day. Your bib tells everyone you pass that this walk is for someone.

Log your walk on Strava

Strava is a free app that records your walk and adds it to our Team LONG HAUL club page. Joining the club is optional and won't affect your registration, but it lets you view our official 3-mile route, record your walk and add it to the team page, post a photo from the finish, and cheer on Team LONG HAUL walkers across the country.

Join Team LONG HAUL on Strava

Not on Strava? No problem. Send us a screenshot from any fitness app or smartwatch showing your 3 miles, along with your photo.

Before walk day

  1. Get the app. Download Strava for free from the App Store or Google Play, or sign up at strava.com. The free version is all you need.
  2. Create your account. Sign up with your email, Google or Apple account.
  3. Join the club. Open strava.com/clubs/2397335 on your phone and tap Join. You can also search "Team LONG HAUL" under Clubs, but the link is the surest way to find it.
  4. Check your privacy. In Settings, under Privacy Controls, make sure your activities are visible to Everyone or Followers. Activities set to "Only You" won't show up on the team page. While you're there, turn on Map Visibility to hide the start and end of your walks, so your map doesn't show where you live.

On walk day

  1. Open Strava and tap Record.
  2. Choose Walk as the activity type, then tap Start.
  3. Walk your 3 miles. The app shows your distance as you go.
  4. Tap Stop, then Finish, and Save. Add a photo with your bib if you like. Your walk shows up in the club automatically.

Show us where you're walking

Snap a selfie if you're walking solo, or a group photo with the people you walk with, and send it our way. Include your name, your city and state, and who you're walking for. After the walk, MVRF will share photos and stories from walkers nationwide.

Where your money goes

All proceeds benefit the Microvascular Research Foundation and its mission to advance research and solutions for Long COVID.

One day. Three miles. One community.

Walk for someone fighting. Walk in memory of someone lost. Walk toward answers.
